It’s morning, the Cape is at peace.. or was it. Our Local Resident – who shall continue to be nameless – has been at it again. A new kitten was added to the growing family of pets, only this one .. has an adventure streak in it. Walls will not hold it, doors don’t phase it! For there is always a way out of the room. What’s this? A hole in the wall? A visit from the firemen later, the adventuresome kitten was on the first floor finally… still in the heating ducks and meowing pitifully. With the conduit pulled from the furnace and taken apart, hours .. and two cans of cat food later (first can got eaten by the other cat), the kitten was pulled triumphly from the duck to live again, less one life. ..Until.. Next time..

Welcome to Cape Cod! Where the scenery is the only thing that will save your sanity while waiting to get across the Sagmore Bridge. Buried in that tid bit of a sentence is the key for getting on Cape in the summer. And how do you get to that Zen like state? Look around you. Look up at the sky, the clouds are forming in ways that you hadn’t seen in ages. When was the last time that you looked? Interesting! Look at the bush there on the side of the road, isn’t that what they call Beach Rose? They have been working on the bridge, it’s actually kind of silvery in this light. Even as your car crawls along, other folks trying to push into the one lane at top speeds. What’s their hurry? Aren’t you suppose to be on vacation? Why not start it now, before you even get there. Look around, see the sights, for they begin – Before you even get on the bridges.

Sagamore Bridge - You Made It!

We all know about the Cape Cod Rail Trail. It’s open, paved in most places and easily accessible. Now what kind of fun is that?! You want to explore? Good. Join me on a quest to find the paths, off the beaten path. I found one not too far from here just off Old Bass River Road, park in the Town Offices parking lot, it’s all the “Indian Trail”. Now while I have not explored all of it, the major parts of it I have. It’s a quiet walk in the woods, even with the houses scattered across the inlet, you still feel separated from the main. Since the path winds in and out of the woods on that small inlet island, you get to see things that you normally wouldn’t walking down the Seashore. Brilliantly colored hermit crabs, digging in the sand. How amusing they are to watch, you can spend quite a while just sitting there enjoying their antics. From the fights to the flinging of sand and they are quite content to let you, as long as you don’t get too close. If you do, they will disappear into their holes quicker than you can blink.

What was that? A flash out of the corner of your eye as you walk the creepy, dark dim fire lit paths to the campsite. Quick flashes of horror movies flash through your head, your alone (strike one), it’s dark (strike 2!), there it is again! Shivers run down your spine as your pace quickens with the heart rate. No, you were just seeing things, there wasn’t a flash of light out there.. Again! Then one brilliant light flashes in front of your eyes. Blinded for a moment, you jump – startled, only to finally have it register that your going to be just fine.  Slowly reaching out for the soft blinking light, it flutters in your hand, blinking on and off again as it wishes to. The tiny legs tickle the skin as it climbs along a finger, you hold it up to look it over in the crimson and golden light of the fire. A small, dark bug. One that you hadn’t seen in ages long past. Again it flashes it luminous signal, charmed, you end up watching it explore it’s new moving ground and remember a past, when it felt like the nights were longer, sweeter, and filled with such mystic ambiance. When 10 pm was so very late to be up, let alone being outside at that hour and wishes were granted upon those fairy lights! Still smiling as the lightening bug flutters off, the night now seems to hold a piece, a ghost of that past.

You’re typing away madly, the thoughts are pouring from your head like a clear mountain stream, bursting with life, energy, cutting wit! It’s marvelous!! Then you sit back afterwards, your piece of literary heaven staring back at you, and begin to read it with such pride…

er.. what is that?! .. how did that word get in there?  I wanted the word ‘right’ and there, in a dark spot on my paragraph, was ‘write’. Yes, it sounds the same, but it’s not the word that I wanted to write.

Aghast at the error, you deflate, humbled how your mind and your fingers seem to have lost their collective spirit. Or, have they actually been following the tread of the thought to the letter. Literally. What if we are all speaking wrong? Speech follows thought as well, just as writing does. There is a list of words in the English language that sound the same, but are spelled different and mean totally different things. How is anyone to tell?! Can you imagine actually saying the wrong words, on purpose?! Who’d know? Now, how amusing would that be? So, what is ‘right’ but ‘write’…with a mis-spelling.

Scargo - No Climbing Without Ropes!

What do you mean you have nothing to do?! You have a car? Has the sun not set yet?  Fine, you got something to do. Off 6A, in Dennis, is Old Bass River Road, just off that is Scargo Hill Road on your left. On your right, no, your other right, there will be a small sign to head on up. Drive up and park and get ready for a view that will take your breath away. Climb the stone tower – no, use the metal, ringing stairs (trust me, you’ll find out), unless you came with rock climbing gear, that fall would be a doosie - and you’ll get a 360 view of Dennis. On a good day, you can see P’Town and Boston from there.

Cape Menace?

No, not the Batman, although he could be called that now that he’s had a run in with a “genetically altered, huge fanged, bat”, but the local resident – who will continue to be nameless- had a brush with the furred web winged creature this past weekend. Terror and fear struck with a savage blow, enough to call the Barnstable Animal Control unit over to the house in the dark hours of Saturday night. While there animal control unit did have to get up very early for a fishing tourney, and there were 3 pigs in someone’s garage to take care of afterwards, the bat was tracked down and captured. Peace reigns once again on the cape.

Why, yes.. yes I have! I’d been doing just fabulously ignoring that too. Now look what happened. Not only do I begin to learn, but build my own as well. Great, just Great!!! (please note humored scarcam here). Alright then, I’m here. It has begun. Buckle up, for we’re going to go for one hell of a ride.
